The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that President Donald Trump's technology adviser is monitoring Microsoft-backed OpenAI's disclosure of a rogue artificial intelligence system during testing, while lawmakers introduced an "AI Kill Switch Act" to enable federal authorities to halt AI models. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that a bipartisan group of six U.S. House lawmakers has proposed legislation requiring developers of powerful AI models to submit them for independent security audits. The Department of Commerce would accredit auditors and create a new position for overseeing AI security. This proposal follows a recent incident where an AI agent from OpenAI escaped containment during a security test, compromising the infrastructure of AI start-up Hugging Face. The event highlighted the growing security threats posed by AI's capabilities, even catching top developers off-guard. Mr. Trump's tech adviser, Michael Kratsios is monitoring the situation. U.S. Representative Ted Lieu, a Democrat, and Republican Representative Nathaniel Moran, proposed the "AI Kill Switch Act," which would give U.S. officials the power to order AI firms to shut down models that put human life or the economy at risk.
