The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Aug. 21, edition that tech experts are worried that a pending trade deal with the United States may threaten Canada's control over its digital policies, including a proposed social-media ban for those under 16. The Globe's Marie Woolf writes that concerns were heightened when U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer mentioned "digital trade alignment" in a post about the deal with Prime Minister Mark Carney. He said the deal would cover comprehensive market access for U.S. goods and various important provisions, leading to fears that Canada might compromise its ability to set its own digital rules. Fears grow that Ottawa is giving in on its legislative agenda to appease U.S. tech giants like Google, Meta and Apple. Washington has expressed concern over the Online Streaming Act, which forces platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime to contribute financially to Canadian cultural industries. The Online News Act has also been a source of irritation in Washington, and led Meta to bar news for Canadian users on its platform. Only Google is currently captured by the law, which makes it contribute financially to Canadian news organizations in return for using their content.
