The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Canadians are still holding back from travelling south of the border, as trips by Americans to Canada rose for the first time in eight months in October, Statistics Canada reported. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe says the number of Canadian-resident return trips from the United States in October totalled 2.33 million, down 26.3 per cent from 3.17 million a year ago. "There's a lot of hesitation around travelling to the U.S.," said Amra Durakovic at Flight Centre. Political tension over U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, changing immigration and border policies and a lousy exchange rate are continuing to discourage many Canadians from travelling stateside, Ms. Durakovic said. "Being uncertain whether or not you'll be stopped at the border, I think, just creates a lot of stress." Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by car dropped 30.2 per cent to 1.6 million in October, while the number of return trips by air dropped 15.1 per cent compared with the same month a year earlier. Air Canada and WestJet have been expanding their services to more destinations in Europe, South America and Asia as travellers look for options outside of the U.S.
