The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney says he has not formed an opinion about Ontario Premier Doug Ford's push to lengthen the main runway and allow commercial jets at Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport -- but pledged to hold consultations this summer with residents. The Globe's Jeff Gray and Laura Stone write that both Mr. Ford and the head of the Toronto Port Authority, which oversees the downtown airport and is drafting plans for a major expansion, have previously said the idea has the federal government's support. The Prime Minister has called the concept an "interesting vision." But on Thursday, Mr. Carney said he hadn't made up his mind, noting that public consultation has not yet taken place. "I personally have not formed an opinion, just to be absolutely clear, on the airport," Mr. Carney told reporters at an event in Toronto to announce his government's artificial-intelligence strategy. The proposal has long been opposed by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and citizens' groups, who warn that jets overhead would spoil the waterfront. Local Liberal MPs have been cautious in their recent public comments about the expansion plan. Any expansion must still be approved by Ottawa.
