The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the Indo-Pacific is crucial for Canada's aim to boost exports beyond the United States, says International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, following a successful mission to Japan. The Globe's James Griffiths writes that Mr. Sidhu says Canada is on track to hit Prime Minister Mark Carney's goal of doubling non-U.S. exports by 2035, after the sector grew about $33-billion last year. "We're well on the way to achieve that," Mr. Sidhu says of the $300-billion target set by the PM. Mr. Sidhu says: "When you look at the trade agreements that Canada's negotiating, typically the government of Canada would do one or two trade agreements a year. We've completed multiple in just 12 months." He says there are more deals on the horizon. He will also be leading a trade mission to India toward the end of the year, as Ottawa continues to try to repair relations with that other Asian economic giant. In Japan, Mr. Sidhu says there was great interest in Canadian food and energy exports, particularly liquid natural gas, LNG. He says Canada is in a good spot in LNG; shipments from the West Coast reach Indo-Pacific markets in 10 days, while those from the Gulf of Mexico take twice as long.
