Globe says Blackline bracing for change with Trump

2024-11-07 07:34 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Nov. 7, edition that the tariffs on imports promised by the president-elect could pose a significant risk to Canada, which sends over 70 per cent of its exports to the U.S. The Globe's Mark Rendell and Jason Kirby write that Canada's economy may face considerable challenges with Donald Trump's second term as U.S. president. The potential for trade wars, tariffs and a difficult renegotiation of North America's free-trade agreement could hinder Canadian exports and reduce business investment in Canada. Mr. Trump campaigned on a protectionist platform, promising a 10-per-cent to 20-per-cent universal tariff on all imports to the United States. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters chief executive officer Cody Slater say when it comes to the USMCA renewal, Canada needs to take a Team Canada approach, as it did during the NAFTA replacement talks in 2018. Blackline Safety chief executive officer Cody Slater says Mr. Trump's tariffs, if enacted, could force his company to shift some of its production from Calgary to the U.S. years sooner that it might have otherwise planned. Doing so now "is not something we'd like to do so I don't look at it as positive from a business standpoint."
