The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Aug. 4, edition that Canadian banks are investing in artificial intelligence to eliminate remaining clerical roles and enhance efficiency for skilled positions, raising concerns about job cuts. The Globe's John Turley-Ewart writes that traditionally, innovations have aimed at increasing productivity rather than reducing staff, so it's likely AI adoption will follow a similar trend. That banks are among the fastest to adopt AI is, in the context of Canada's productivity crisis, worth commending. The Globe found that more than 30 per cent of finance and insurance firms are using AI, compared with just 1.5 per cent of businesses in accommodation and food services. CIBC's chief technology and information officer, Richard Jardim, says with the use of AI, "there are different roles we see changing, where we either move people around, or we have them adjust the type of work they do."
