The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Ovintiv exited Canada in 2013, amid a natural gas turndown, headquartering in Denver. The Globe's Tim Kiladze writes that with the stock now down by half, Ovintiv is buying back in to Canada. In early November chief executive officer Brendan McCracken announced the $3.5-billion acquisition of Calgary-based NuVista Energy, enhancing Ovintiv's exposure in the Montney formation. The Globe notes the transaction is not a one-off. On Wednesday, Baytex Energy announced it would sell its U.S. assets to focus on its Canadian portfolio. Baytex wanted to pay down its debt ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war wreaking havoc to energy price, jeopardizing deal activity. Meanwhile, Cenovus completed its $8.6-billion acquisition of MEG Energy last week. The Globe says these deals are a welcome sign for Ottawa, which has an ambitious agenda to attract international investors to Canada's natural resource sectors. BMO's Jeremy McCrea says, "We've seen more operators take an interest in Canadian oil and gas," some of which stems from "a federal government that's looking to be more workable with the oil and gas industry and more keen to get our product to market here."
