Globe says Blackstone, Korea have faith in LNG Canada

2026-11-03 08:11 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that back in June, the head of Korea Gas travelled for a tanker photo op in Incheon to make the case for a massive investment in another port: LNG Canada's planned $33-billion terminal expansion in Kitimat, B.C. The Globe's Andrew Willis writes that Choi Yeon-hye, then the company's chief executive officer, praised the reliability of a "strategic energy asset we can control ourselves." Korea Gas, a 5-per-cent stakeholder, and its partners lived through 13 years of cost overruns and delays before the $18-billion LNG Canada facility began shipping. A build-out will double capacity. Some of the largest asset managers in the world are buying into the argument that Korea Gas is making. On Monday, New York's Blackstone joined four Canadian pension funds to purchase a minority stake in LNG Canada from Mitsubishi for $3.1-billion (U.S.). State-controlled Korea Gas backs LNG Canada for strategic reasons. The utility wants to diversify from Middle East producers such as Qatar, now mixed up in the Iran war. The money managers are investing because they regard LNG Canada as a reliable, cash-spinning business, despite the risks that come with the facility's aggressive growth plans.
