The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that President Donald Trump has ordered American forces to pause new strikes against Iran, citing that Mideast allies are close to a deal to end the Iran war. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that the emerging deal "would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran's nuclear threat," Mr. Trump wrote in a Saturday social media post. However, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz "will in no way return to the status it was before Feb. 28." He said Iran is discussing shipping through the strait with Oman, but that there's no current talk about reopening the waterway. Iran's defence minister said the country was "neither surprised nor passive" after Mr. Trump's announcement and said Iran continues to remain alert in the face of concrete threats from the United States. While Iran's leaders appear united in a war strategy signalling strength and endurance, a struggle for control seems to be brewing within the theocracy's leadership between those who oppose all negotiations with the U.S. and others who count on military pressure to win at the negotiating table.
