The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Nov. 15, edition that Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson says the Major Projects Office (MPO) will now be handling individual proposals at a slower pace. The Globe's Jeffrey Jones writes that Mr. Hodgson says: "Now that the [MPO] is maturing, and now that the process is maturing, I think the likely outcome is we'll let proponents bring projects forward and they'll go in their normal course. We won't have to create an environment where we need to bring whole blocks of them at one time. My sense is we'll start to see one every couple of months going forward." Prime Minister Mark Carney announced six projects on Thursday. One of the projects involved Nouveau Monde Graphite's Matawinie mine in Quebec. Another involved the proposed $2-billion (U.S.) Crawford nickel project, which is being developed by Canada Nickel. Mr. Hodgson says the role of the MPO has not changed since it was established earlier this year as the centrepiece of the contentious Bill C-5, known as the Building Canada Act. Mr. Hodgson says Mr. Carney set a $500-billion (Canadian) target to attract private capital over five years, aiming to create jobs and reduce economic reliance on the U.S.
