The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that Canada Nickel head Mark Selby was expected to be in South Korea or Japan meeting executives on Thursday. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that instead, Mr. Selby was preparing to board a helicopter near Timmins, Ont., with Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson to tour the site of his proposed nickel mine. The visit marked nearly 20 years of Mr. Selby's efforts to build a nickel mine in Canada. Although he has not achieved it yet, he is closer now that Ottawa's Major Projects Office has fast-tracked his proposed Crawford nickel mine. Now that the Crawford mine is getting attention from the Canadian government, Mr. Selby is hopeful he can create the world's next big nickel district. He says: "There's only a handful of projects on that list. This is big."
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the Crawford mine would "anchor Canada's leadership in clean industrial materials" by producing nickel for batteries and green steel.
He said the mine is projected to release carbon emissions that are 90 per cent below the global average compared with other nickel mines.
He said, "Crawford will set the global standard for the future of responsible mining."
