The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Oct. 29, edition that Canadian Pacific Kansas City is reporting flat profits despite a big boost in revenue in its latest quarter.
A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that the Calgary-based railway says net income reached $916-million in the quarter ended Sept. 30 versus $917-million in the same period a year earlier (all figures U.S.).
CPKC says third quarter revenues rose 15 per cent year-over-year to $4.22-billion, bolstered by a major jump in grain and shipping-container volumes.
It says diluted earnings per share climbed to $1.04 from $1.01 per share the year before.
The company says its bottom line was dented by fuel costs that surged 61 per cent year-over-year to $667-million, making it the largest expense outside of labour due to the soaring price of diesel.
In a release, chief executive officer Keith Creel said the railway remains "in the early chapters of the CPKC story" and stressed longer-term opportunities.
