The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 15, edition that shoppers who made on-line purchases at Canadian Tire may have had their personal information compromised due to a data breach identified on Oct. 2. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that the breach involves information from e-commerce accounts associated with Canadian Tire and its banners, including SportChek, Mark's/L'Equipeur and Party City. The data included names, addresses, e-mails, birth years, encrypted passwords and some incomplete credit card numbers, similar to what appears on a store receipt, according to Canadian Tire. Fewer than 150,000 account holders had their full dates of birth compromised in the breach. Affected customers will be contacted and offered credit monitoring from TransUnion Canada, according to Canadian Tire. The breached information did not include Canadian Tire Bank or Triangle Rewards loyalty data and was not enough for anyone unauthorized to access accounts and make purchases, the retailer said.
It added that the incident did not impact its ability to facilitate in-store transactions and its e-commerce systems are operational.
