The National Post reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that politicians travelling to Washington outside his government often return without gaining new insights into Canada-U.S. trade or ongoing negotiations. The Post's Stephanie Taylor writes that Mr. Carney says, "In the end, there's one negotiator for Canada, and that is the government of Canada." His comments come after Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, along with some of the party's other MPs, including its foreign affairs critic Michael Chong, went to Washington to participate in a networking event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada, which saw them meet with Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and included other federal and provincial officials. The Canadian Press reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources, that Mr. Greer told those in attendance the "America First" policy under President Donald Trump was unmovable and that the U.S. was interested in working with Canada on energy issues. Mr. Carney said on Thursday the people that have gone to Washington don't know what's on the table or where the negotiations stand. Mr. Jivani says he's trying to help the PM navigate the Canada-U.S. relationship.
