The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the $6.4-billion Gordie Howe International bridge first was supposed to open Friday. The Globe's Kate Helmore and Adrian Morrow write that new span will be the only public bridge directly connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ont. But the bridge opening was abruptly cancelled Thursday at the demand of the Trump administration. The Moroun family, which owns the nearby Ambassador bridge, was behind the delay. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra are trying to save the Moroun family from losing too much money once they have to compete with the publicly owned Gordie Howe bridge. The news comes as no surprise to those who live in the shadow of the Ambassador bridge. The Moroun family has fought for years to shut down any competition to the Ambassador, pouring tens of millions of dollars into federal and state politics along the way, including $1-million (U.S.) to support President Donald Trump's campaign. The road cuts through the Mexicantown neighbourhood of Detroit. Resident Steve Boyle told The Globe, "The truck traffic coming through this neighbourhood is ridiculous," adding he is tired of the constant lobbying of the Moroun family.
