The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that as the buzz of the World Cup descends on Canada, cannabis shops in Toronto and Vancouver are preparing for an onslaught of fans looking for a buzz from legal marijuana. The Globe's Jake Ross writes that the 2026 FIFA World Cup marks the first time that at least part of the tournament will be held where marijuana is legal. Although fans cannot light up at the matches, the potential for increased foot traffic has cannabis dispensaries excited about what they expect to be a sales boon and lawyers advising shops on how to avoid a legal red card. Sean Kady, co-owner of Cosmic Charlies, a cannabis shop in Toronto, said he is looking forward to welcoming fellow cannabis enthusiasts to the city. He thinks that part of what will attract toking soccer fans to the shop is the novelty of being able to buy marijuana from a store, and the ability to order it and have it delivered to your door. Mr. Kady's store is promoting a bong shaped like the World Cup trophy. But shops have to be careful. Not only do they have to contend with strict government regulations around advertising, but FIFA's copyright restrictions add another dimension to staying onside with product promotion.
