The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that a new report by Oxford Economics suggests that Canada could benefit from U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war, as the U.S. has the lowest effective tariff rate on Canadian exports at 2.5 per cent. The Post's Gigi Suhanic writes that this rate is lower than Mexico's 4 per cent, and significantly less than rates on other countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and European Union. "If the relatively low tariffs apparently being paid on imports from Mexico and Canada persist, these two economies could pick up some benefits from shifts in supply chains, although uncertainties over the end game for tariffs and the future of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement will be near-term drags," said Oxford Economic economist Adam Slater. CUSMA-compliant goods escape U.S. tariffs, though the trade agreement is scheduled to be reviewed in July, 2026. Some people, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, think that deadline could be accelerated. Still, Mr. Slater described the current estimates for the tariff rates "as something of a puzzle." He added, "It may be the case that tariff exemptions for these economies are broader than assumed."
