The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that under a trade deal between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping, fewer than 16,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles have entered Canada since January as part of a "new strategic partnership" to strengthen economic ties and ease tensions. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that is less than one-third of the 49,000 Chinese-made EVs Canada planned to allow by 2026 under a deal that cut tariffs. The success of the EV quota will likely be a subject of talks between Mr. Carney and Mr. Xi when they meet in roughly 10 weeks. Huzaif Qaisar, director of communications for International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, says 15,603 Chinese-made EVs have arrived in Canada this year. Some Chinese automakers are still seeking certification for their products in Canada, which is why a few haven't started using the quota yet. Mr. Qaisar said three companies have obtained access to the quota so far, adding that imports under the quota are granted on a "first come, first served" basis. The quota of 49,000 is under 3 per cent of annual new vehicle sales in Canada. The quota is slated to rise each year and would total 67,000 by 2031.
