The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney says there has been a "slight intensification" of talks with the United States over an unfinished trade deal that could provide Canada with relief from U.S. tariffs, adding any progress that's been made is because Washington is moving closer to Ottawa's position. A triple-bylined item led by Steven Chase reports that Mr. Carney did not say how close the two sides are to an agreement that could cut U.S. tariffs on goods such as autos or steel. The Canadian leader said the chances of a deal with Washington will improve to the extent the U.S. is willing to back off of "red lines" drawn by Ottawa in August. The White House wants some kind of breakthrough ahead of midterm elections. President Donald Trump is eager to demonstrate to American voters that he is bringing down the cost of living. The Prime Minister also signalled he's not sure he can trust the U.S. government to honour a future trade deal. Flavio Volpe at the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association said: "I understand the two sides are talking and the President has shown flexibility for strategic midterm interests, so maybe this is a fertile opening. We will wait and see."
