The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Aug. 25, edition that Canada's commodity-heavy stock index rose on Monday, driven by higher gold prices, as investors reacted to new United States tariffs on Canadian goods following recent negotiation breakdowns. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 0.26 per cent at 36,714.12 points. The materials sector, which includes metal mining shares, rose 1.4 per cent as gold hit a three-month high against a subdued dollar, while investors awaited U.S. inflation data and remarks from Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh this week for clues on the interest-rate outlook. I-80 Gold, Seabridge Gold and Novagold Resources were up between 6.8 per cent and 10.5 per cent. The heavyweight energy sector was the biggest drag on the index, falling 0.9 per cent as oil prices slipped, with investors taking profits ahead of expected new U.S. sanctions on Iran. Manufacturers Bombardier, Magna International and Linamar were among the biggest losers, falling 5.9 per cent, 6.6 per cent and 8.3 per cent.
