The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the U.S. government wants to take a share of revenue from some pharmaceutical sales in Canada and other countries under deals drug makers struck with the Trump administration. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that since entering office last year, President Donald Trump has demanded that prices outside the United States increase to offset lower prices in the U.S. Copies of two such agreements -- signed by drug makers Pfizer and Eli Lilly -- show that Canada is one of eight "specified countries" targeted by the agreement, and reveal for the first time that a portion of the revenue is to be shared with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The documents were obtained by Public Citizen Inc., a U.S. consumer-advocacy group, through a freedom of information request. The documents are heavily redacted, although which sections are blacked out vary between the files. When asked about whether the agreements showed that the U.S. government would be taking a share of drug sales in Canada and other countries, HHS sent The Globe a link to a social-media post by White House spokesperson Kush Desai that said drug companies would "repatriate increased foreign revenue."
