The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, Feb. 5, edition that MDA Space is doubling down on efforts to attract top engineering talent from around the world as it prepares for defence-driven growth.
A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that MDA is working with the Quebec government to address tax needs for new international hires. MDA is finishing a new facility in Montreal that will allow it to build as many as 10 satellites a week, up from one per week last year.
MDA chief Mike Greenley said he hopes Canada will come to be seen as an attractive place for engineers to land. Asked about current U.S. immigration policy, he said: "If people were looking to go into the United States to work in space, and that was now not going to work out for them, Canada's a great place to back off into because we have a very expanding space program and it's still a North American base."
But policy-makers can help with recruitment, he added. MDA would like to see a lower income tax for a new employee's first five years in Canada, for example.
He said: "We encourage that type of thinking. Give us the tools to bring the best talent into Canada, and help us have corporate tools to attract and retain head offices in the country."
