Globe says Loblaw hears settlement attracted fraudsters

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, June 13, edition that tens of thousands of payments totaling $3.7-million from the recent class-action settlement over bread price-fixing in Canada have been flagged by banks for possible fraud. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson and Tu Thanh Ha write that settlement administrators are now trying to recover part of the funds, as some payments are frozen while others may be unrecoverable. Some of the frozen payments might still be deemed legitimate. The $500-million settlement was agreed to in 2024 by Loblaw, and its parent, George Weston, to settle two class-action lawsuits over the companies' role in a scheme to fix bread prices from 2001 to 2015. The administering company was alerted to possible fraudulent activity, as stated in documents filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on June 8. The case is likely the largest and most complex class-action settlement in Canadian history, attracting fraudsters trying to claim millions meant for affected consumers. During the application process, the settlement administrator, Verita Global, blocked about 40 million requests to file claims due to security measures that screened for bot activity and fake identities.
