The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, May 23, edition that President Donald Trump swore in new Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh on Friday. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that by taking the unusual step of holding the ceremony in the East Room and not the Fed, Mr. Trump made clear his pleasure that Mr. Warsh is now in charge. The Iran war has led to rising gas prices, unsettled financial markets and inflation concerns. This has prompted doubts about whether Mr. Warsh will respond to Mr. Trump's calls to lower rates. Nevertheless, Mr. Trump expressed confidence that Mr. Warsh would prioritize a strong economy. But having the event at the White House raises more questions about the Fed's independence at a time when Mr. Trump has constantly sought to bend the independent central bank to his will. Mr. Trump said, "I want Kevin to be totally independent." In the next breath, however, he said that "in the eyes of many, the Fed has lost its way in recent years" under his predecessor, Democratic president Joe Biden. Mr. Trump also suggested that Mr. Warsh is looking to lead policies that promote "positive economic growth" and that doing so did not have to mean higher inflation.
