Globe says Novo sees Dr. Reddy's generic get Cdn nod

2026-04-29 05:54 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Indian pharmaceutical firm Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is now the first company approved by Health Canada to sell a generic version of Ozempic. The Globe's Chris Hannay and Kelly Grant write that this approval comes nearly four months after generic Ozempic became legal in Canada. The move could lead to discounts of up to 65 per cent for patients and insurance plans facing rising costs from Ozempic claims. Health Canada's website was updated Tuesday afternoon to show that it had issued a notice of compliance to Dr. Reddy's to make an injectable form of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and its sister drug Wegovy. The medications are typically prescribed for type 2 diabetes and weight loss. Ozempic, made by Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk, is by far the bestselling drug in Canada, with $2.9-billion in sales in 2025. That's more than three times the next bestselling drug. Hennick Humber Hospital director Stephen Glazer called the approval of a generic semaglutide product "huge, huge, huge, huge" news for Canadians struggling with obesity. Over a million Canadians use semaglutide, and this number is likely to rise with the introduction of affordable generics.
