Globe says Northland's Baltic Power sparked up Friday

2026-07-13 08:26 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, July 11, edition that a new $6-billion (U.S.) offshore wind farm in Poland, supported by Canada's Northland Power, marks the start of future investments between the two countries, according to Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson. The Globe's Jeffrey Jones writes that the development enhances Poland's energy security, a key issue since Russia invaded Ukraine. It also opens the door for transactions involving liquefied natural gas, nuclear power and critical minerals, Mr. Hodgson said after meeting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other officials in Poland. Closer economic ties between Poland and Canada reflect Prime Minister Mark Carney's vision of diversifying relationships and increasing non-U.S. trade, the minister said. The 1.1 gigawatt Baltic Power project, owned by Northland and Plock, Poland-based ORLEN, generated its first electricity on Friday and is expected to begin commercial operations later this year. Northland has a 49-per-cent interest and operates the wind farm, located 23 kilometres off the Polish coast. State-controlled ORLEN owns the remainder. The project currently has 54 of its 76 turbines installed. The rest are scheduled to be completed this year.
