The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Shopify co-founder Tobi Lutke sparked debate on X by suggesting pensioners, like the underaged, should be excluded from voting since they no longer have a stake in the economy. The Globe's guest columnist Mike Moffat writes that Mr. Lutke says voting should be limited to those "with a stake in the future." Mr. Moffat strongly opposes disenfranchising retirees. He says Canadians should be wary of demographic trends that may shift politics toward voters prioritizing personal finances over Canada's overall prosperity. Voters prioritize the economy, but not all economic issues affect them equally. Economic concerns can be split into two categories: Pocketbook issues, which directly impact a voter's financial situation, like grocery prices and HST rebate amounts; and sociotropic issues, which relate to the economic health of the country, such as GDP growth and unemployment rates. Voter motivations vary, but sociotropic concerns are key. A 2024 review of 100 studies shows that national economic performance is a strong predictor of incumbent re-election. Plainly put, when GDP growth is high and the unemployment rate is low, incumbents are more likely to be elected.
