Globe says Toyota likely crimped by Trump's tariffs

2025-11-18 07:20 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Japan's economy contracted for the first time in over a year in the July to September quarter, as tariffs from the Trump administration impacted exports from one of the U.S.'s top trading partners. A triple bylined item led by Sean Silcoff reports that the quarterly decline of 1.8 per cent was the first year-over-year drop in growth in six quarters. Japanese exports fell 1.2 per cent during the period, driven by a slump in automobile and parts shipments, a sector acutely affected by higher U.S. duties. In July, Japan secured a trade deal with the United States that included a commitment to invest $550-billion (U.S.) in the U.S. economy, which resulted in a 15-per-cent tariff on Japan's exports -- lower than initially threatened but still harmful. Moody's economist Stefan Angrick says the United States has been one of the few global markets where Japan could still reliably send high-value exports, such as Toyotas and automotive components. He says, "That's not the case anymore." He says for Japan, "it's kind of hard to see a way out of this." Mr. Angrick says the question now is to what extent sustained U.S. tariffs will depress Japan's long-term growth trajectory.
