The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says any potential deal with Canada should include higher tariffs and greater access for Americans, as officials from both countries prepare for upcoming talks on a North American free-trade agreement. The Globe's Laura Stone reports that Mr. Greer told U.S. television networks that U.S. and Canadian trade officials spoke on Wednesday and that the Trump administration was open to Canada's ideas for reaching an agreement. But he also told CBC News after President Donald Trump's State of the Union address that Canada, like other countries, must accept "protective tariffs" to reshore American industries. "If Canada wants to agree that we can have some level of higher tariff on them while they open up their markets to us on things like dairy and other things, then that's a helpful conversation," Mr. Greer told CBC. The meetings in Washington are taking place as Canada prepares for a review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), amid reports that Mr. Trump may be looking to exit the deal or pursue bilateral agreements. Mr. Greer said the U.S. is focused on reshoring supply chains related to automotive, steel and aluminum.
