Globe says Ford hears GM starting talks with Unifor

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Unifor plans to focus upcoming negotiations with General Motors Canada on job security, specifically seeking a guarantee for reinvestment in the CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that the plant has been idle since last May, leaving the future of the Ingersoll factory uncertain. About 1,200 auto workers have been temporarily laid off for over 15 months, and GM has not announced any plans for the factory. Unifor is due to begin talks with GM for a new collective agreement on Aug. 10. The current agreement expires on Sept. 20. Securing long-term investment guarantees from Canadian automakers is not straightforward given the impact President Donald Trump's trade war has had on their operations. The Detroit Three -- Stellantis, Ford and GM -- have had to incur upward of $12-billion in tariff costs since early 2025, lay off thousands of workers and restructure supply chains. Unifor went toe-to-toe in talks with Ford last month, locking in annual wage increases of 3 per cent over a three-year contract, and critically, getting the automaker to agree to a pathway to full employment at its Oakville assembly plant by July, 2027.
