The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, July 8, edition that Canada should not depend on U.S. courts and transit routes to move energy within its borders. The Globe's guest columnist Fred Gallagher writes that much of Western Canadian crude travels through the Enbridge pipeline system, crossing the U.S. before returning to Canada at Sarnia, Ont. A key part of this system is Line 5. This route has faced controversy and legal challenges, making the status of oil flow uncertain. The proposed pipeline from Alberta and Ontario is a crucial solution for Canada, but we need to be more ambitious. We should also consider restarting the canceled Energy East pipeline. Since 2018, Enbridge has sought to construct a tunnel replacing the aging pipe. The tunnel work has faced years of permitting delays, litigation, opposition from environmental and indigenous groups, and now a rejection by the U.S. Supreme Court to move a Michigan environmental lawsuit from state to federal court. Replacement of this pipeline section with a tunnel is unlikely to be complete before 2031. Canada's energy supply relies heavily on U.S. trade and transportation agreements, making it vulnerable to tensions and comments about being a "51st state."
