The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Pierre Karl Peladeau has launched a battle for control of Transat A.T., calling for the ouster of the airline's chair and a top-to-bottom review of its operations and direction. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that on Monday, the Quebecor chief executive officer called for a restructuring of Transat's balance sheet that would enable the company to attract new investment to fuel growth. He is also seeking a review that includes the direction, senior management and cost structure at Transat, which he labelled an operational and financial underperformer. Mr. Peladeau wants chair Susan Kudzman replaced by Andre Brosseau and the number of company directors reduced to six from 11. Mr. Peladeau said: "The goal is not to sell the company. My interest at the beginning was to take control of the company and grow it. There's a lot of examples in life that shows that there's money to be made in airlines." Transat has a strong brand said Mr. Peladeau, who has been a Transat investor for about four years. "The fundamentals of the industry is good, but you need to run the company according to proper practices," he said. Transat said it is reviewing Mr. Peladeau's proposals.
