The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Health Minister Marjorie Michel announced Ottawa is withholding $50-million in federal funds from Canada Health Infoway due to governance concerns regarding the $300-million failed PrescribeIT program. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that the chair of the House of Commons health committee, meanwhile, has urged Infoway to provide documents for a parliamentary probe, warning of potential contempt of Parliament. The program was shut down in most of the country last month due to less than 5 per cent of prescriptions using it. The board dismissed its chief executive officer in April after a poor committee hearing and reports from The Globe highlighting issues and high costs, including the CEO's nearly $900,000 annual salary. In response to questions from Conservative MPs in the House of Commons in recent weeks, Ms. Michel said the government budgeted $50-million for Canada Health Infoway this fiscal year, which began April 1. During Monday's Question Period, Ms. Michel said the government is careful about its spending and continued, "That is why, when we realized that Canada Health Infoway was not completely fulfilling its mission, we decided to halt funding."
