Globe says iShares Core Canadian worth consideration

2025-10-15 08:18 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the bond market is in a state of uncertainty. The Globe's regular guest columnist Gordon Pape writes that if you are nervous about market volatility, the you should consider buying iShares Core Canadian Short Term Corporate Bond Index. Mr. Pape believes the current unit price of $19.30 is a decent entry point. Its annual payout is 74.4 cents. It has a yield of 3.85 per cent. Mr. Pape calls it a "lower risk" play. This fund invests in a portfolio of short-term Canadian corporate bonds, rated investment grade (triple-B or better). The fund is ahead 4.27 per cent year-to-date. Do not expect that to continue over the long haul. The 10-year average annual compound rate of return is 2.83 per cent. However, as long as central banks continue easing, this fund should outperform. Mr. Pape says the fund is reflecting the current trend of North American central banks, which is to reduce interest rates. As a result, it is generating higher returns than Mr. Pape is seeing from universe bond funds or long-term funds. The fund has almost $2-billion in assets under management, which suggests a lot of people are using it as a haven. The management fee is a low 0.1 per cent.
