The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Iran said on Wednesday that it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in response to the United States sinking five Iranian oil tankers.
A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the attacks caused oil prices to surge, with Brent crude futures exceeding $100 (U.S.) a barrel, a symbolic barrier, for the first time since July 24. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps warned of a strong response to future attacks and announced plans to release maps of a new, extended off-limits zone at sea, reaching as far as Chabahar near Pakistan.
President Donald Trump accused Tehran of trying to influence the upcoming November midterms, which will decide Republican control of Congress.
Mr. Trump told reporters that the war will "end immediately after the election because [Iran] can't hold out any longer."
The Wall Street Journal reported that key White House advisers, including Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have warned Mr. Trump that the conflict could continue until his term ends in January, 2029. Recent days have seen increased fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen, raising concerns about global energy supplies from the Middle East.
