The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that the International Energy Agency announced on Wednesday an acceleration of oil stock releases and prioritization of diesel supplies to address soaring fuel prices and supply issues. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says that wars in Iran and Ukraine have disrupted refineries and tanker traffic, driving diesel prices to record highs. The IEA said that quickly completing announced releases could add about 100 million barrels to the market, though analysts and some governments indicated this may not reflect a new intervention. The statement from the IEA followed an agreement by G7 countries on Friday to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel, which raised expectations of additional oil stock releases. The IEA launched a 400-million-barrel release program in March to counter shortages and rising prices caused by the Iran war, although not all of those volumes have yet reached the market. "Member governments expressed support for accelerating the oil stock releases announced in the Collective Action of March, 2026, with a view to completing them as soon as possible," IEA executive director Fatih Birol said in the statement.
