The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Monday was a weak 65-83-162 as the TSX Venture Exchange rose one point to 582. Rough diamond prices continue to slide, and all public diamond companies have been hit hard. Still, the greater market calamity has occurred among miners, not explorers and developers. Yes, Ewan Mason and George Read's Star Diamond Corp. (DIAM) is far removed from its 2007 high of $8.75 and its $1.55-billion market capitalization, and yes, its beleaguered long-term shareholders bemoan the company's current six-cent plight.

Still, it could be worse. Just ask Dermot Desmond, the Irish billionaire with eclectic investment tastes who has backed Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. (MPVD) for over a quarter century. With Mr. Desmond's support and the participation of De Beers Canada, Mountain Province's majority co-venturer at their Gahcho Kue mine in the Northwest Territories, Mountain's stock got to $7.18 in the fall of 2016 as mining was getting under way at its 49-per-cent-owned Gahcho Kue operation.
