The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a weak 58-93-159 as the TSX Venture Exchange lost five points to 545. Yes, by Jove, it appears that rough diamond prices have finally flattened after yet another five-month-long slide. Paul Zimnisky's global rough diamond price index was unaltered by late-to-arrive data and this week's pricing information tacked on 0.1 point to last week's fix, putting the index at 136.5 points, up 0.1 per cent on the week.

Yes, the index is down 0.3 per cent over the past month, but it had been falling roughly 2 per cent per month through its latest decline. Indeed, the flattening has now taken hold sufficiently that the New York-based Mr. Zimnisky has hopefully drawn a third dashed line on his one-year chart to denote the stabilization. This new trench was dug at the 136-point mark, while the previous one, which held from mid-January until it was overrun in mid-March, tried to blunt the attack at the 149-point mark.
