The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Thursday was an upbeat 93-61-156 as the TSX Venture Exchange jumped 10 points to 728. Chris Taylor and Claudia Tornquist's Kodiak Copper Corp. (KDK) rose three cents to 68 cents on 618,000 shares following word of an initial resource estimate for its MPD copper project in Southern British Columbia.

This first MPD calculation lists 56.4 million tonnes indicated at 0.31 per cent copper, accompanied by 0.14 gram of gold and 1.18 grams of silver per tonne. Another 240.7 million tonnes are inferred at slightly lower grades. In all, MPD is credited with 1.67 billion pounds of copper. (The slight grades of precious metals also add up -- the 1.25 million ounces of gold and the 9.2 million ounces of silver juice the equivalent copper content to 2.28 billion pounds.)

This maiden calculation covers just four of seven mineralized areas at MPD, so the skies are still blue across the project. Accordingly, both Ms. Tornquist, president and chief executive officer, and Mr. Taylor, chairman, stepped up to deliver the cheerful weather report. First up was Ms. Tornquist, who applauded the estimate as "an important strategic milestone" for Kodiak. She pointed out that while three areas were not included in the current strategy, the calculation "already shows the considerable scale and potential of the project." The missing troika of zones is now being drilled, she cheers, and she and her crew expect to revise the resource estimate before the end of the year.
