New York spot gold rose $22 to $1,756.80 on Thursday. The TSX-V moved higher with bullion, adding 15.65 points to 635.41 while the TSX gold index regained 4.35 points to 237.39. Most Canadian-listed gold miners regained some lost ground today, with some of the biggest gains recorded by companies revealing second quarter results after yesterday's close.
One, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM), posted a $3.23 gain, closing at $53.89 on 3.8 million shares following word that it earned $275.84-million (U.S.) in its second quarter. This was thanks to record gold production the company says -- but remember that this is the first quarter reported since the company merged with Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd.
Another, Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI), jumped 75 cents to $9.83 on 2.66 million shares today. The move comes on the heels of word late yesterday that the company earned $6.4-million (U.S.) in its second quarter. John McCluskey, president and chief executive officer, cheered the result, noting that the company's new La Yaqui Grande mine reached production ahead of schedule.
