New York spot gold rose early but ended the day down $10.90 to $1,761.60 Tuesday. The TSX-V moved higher, adding 8.72 points to 654.76 while the TSX gold index fell 2.23 points to 236.39. Most Canadian-listed gold miners fell with bullion today. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) bucked the trend, gaining three cents to $2.14 on 2.42 million shares, while Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI), currently putting the gleam in the eyes of suitor Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI: $9.16 (U.S.)), rose four cents to $6.16 on 4.57 million shares.
"If only we had new assays," shareholders of Collin Kettell and Eric Sprott's New Found Gold Corp. (NFG) have groused for weeks, if not months. Well, they have some now, but are still unhappy. New Found not only found new assays in the mail today, but they came from a new area that connects the Keats Main zone with the recently discovered 515 zone. Unfortunately, even the best hits -- a 2.75-metre interval averaging 45.9 grams of gold per tonne in the Umbra-Keats Main area and a 0.55-metre stretch that averaged 147.5 grams per tonne -- failed to enthuse investors, who sent New Found sliding 26 cents to $5.26 on 249,000 shares today.
