New York spot gold slipped $2.40 to $1,790 on Thursday. The TSX-V rose 3.30 points to 673.02, while the TSX gold index dropped 4.04 points to 241.65. Most Canadian gold miners stayed close to home today, but a few strayed from Wednesday's close. One, Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) took a favourable hike, reclaiming 28 cents of the $1.73 it lost yesterday, closing at $6.555 on 6.25 million shares.
Another, Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS), tripped and fell on word of a $174-million (U.S.) loss in its second quarter, slumping $4.27 to $22.73 on 2.44 million shares. The discouraging quarter is the result of "the underperformance at Dolores," one of the company's two main producers, says Michael Steinman, president and chief executive officer. As a result, Pan American recorded an impairment of just over $160-million (U.S.) attributable to the operation. The company also cut its quarterly dividend to 11 cents from the previous 12-cent payment.
