New York spot gold rose 30 cents to $1,939.90 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 4.92 points to 591.52 while the TSX gold index dipped 0.3 point to 274.38. Most Canadian gold miners moved little with generally lethargic investor interest on what was the last day of summer holidays ahead of the Labour Day weekend. Some stocks were down today -- Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) fell 52 cents to $16.86 on 805,000 shares -- but a few managed solid gains. Novagold Resources Inc. (NG), which added 10 cents to $5.69 on 229,000 shares, was one; another was Newmont Corp. (NGT), which was up 27 cents to $53.53 on 208,000 shares.

Gareth Thomas's Westhaven Gold Corp. (WHN) rose one cent to 23.5 cents on 38,000 shares. The company is contemplating a $10-million program for its Shovelnose gold project, just south of Merritt in southwestern British Columbia. The two-phase plan, detailed in a just competed preliminary economic assessment of the South zone of the project, would take Shovelnose to prefeasibility and presumably still larger budgets in the years beyond.
