New York spot gold rose $2.90 to $1,919.30 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.74 point to 585.55 while the TSX gold index dropped 0.64 point to 268.13. Most Canadian gold miners drifted lower, although a few bucked the trend. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) was one, as it added 32 cents to $64.50 on 1.89 million shares. Ero Copper Corp. (ERO) helped lead the retreat -- it fell 75 cents to $26.20 on 494,000 shares. Keeping it company was Centerra Gold Inc. (CG), which lost eight cents to $7.62 on 652,000 shares.

Jason Attew's Liberty Gold Corp. (LGD) closed unchanged at 32 cents on 724,000 shares on word of assays from another eight holes drilled at its Black Pine oxide gold deposit in Idaho. The headline hit yielded a 76.2-metre interval averaging 0.61 gram of gold per tonne, but the subordinate intersections fell well short of that result. Oh, there were a few other significant intervals, but they had barely half the grades. A 73.2-metre hit in a second hole did return 0.45 gram per tonne, but a 64-metre interval in a third hole managed just 0.33 gram per tonne, as did a 54.9-metre hit in a fourth.
