New York spot gold fell $1.10 to $1,918.20 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 4.42 points to 581.13 while the TSX gold index added 0.03 point to 268.16. Most Canadian gold miners lost ground today, so investors might be a bit envious of shareholders of Argonaut Gold Inc. (AR), which added three cents to 67 cents on 2.7 million shares, and West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG), which rose 2.5 cents to 45.5 cents on 543,000 shares. Among those in retreat was Endeavour Mining PLC (EDV), which fell 21 cents to $27.75 on 833,000 shares.

Dan Wilton's First Mining Gold Corp. (FF) closed unchanged at 13 cents on 1.42 million shares. First Mining lost one-half cent to 13 cents on 2.39 million shares yesterday following word of a preliminary economic assessment of its Duparquet project in the Abitibi district of Quebec. The dream sheet is based upon a current resource of 69.2 million tonnes measured and indicated at 1.55 grams of gold per tonne and 37.4 million tonnes inferred at 1.36 grams per tonne, just over four million ounces of gold contained in the Duparquet deposit.
