New York spot gold continued its slide, dropping $1.30 to $1,821.20 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost another 3.08 points to 533.18 -- this is getting wearisome if not worrisome -- while the TSX gold index dropped 0.91 point to 246.55. And so, most Canadian gold miners groaned lower today. Franco-Nevada Corp. (FNV), a $217 stock in May, fell $2.02 to $176.55 on 322,000 shares. Endeavour Mining PLC (EDV), a $37 stock in April, lost 41 cents to $25.46 on 516,000 shares.
News was of little help. Mark Bristow's Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) said today that it is investing $2-billion (U.S.) in an expansion of its Lumwana mine in Zambia, which will turn it into a "world-class producer." The mine is already a Zambia-class producer, as Mr. Bristow, president and chief executive officer, applauds it as having contributed nearly $3-billion (U.S.) to the Zambian economy through taxes, royalties, salaries and purchases since his company took over operations in 2019. No matter: Barrick rose just five cents to $19.51 on 13.48 million shares today.
