New York spot gold added $11.10 to $2,013.80 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 2.75 points to 529.58 while the TSX gold index jumped 5.47 points to 278.36. Most Canadian gold miners had an up day. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) added 50 cents to $22.55 on 4.66 million shares while Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) rose $1.50 to $69.15 on 2.26 million shares. Lundin Gold Inc (LUG) was strong as well. It added 72 cents to $15.90 on 1.19 million shares.
On the other hand, First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) cannot catch a break as its stock retreated 57 cents to $12.74 on 4.44 million shares today. The media and analysts are still rehashing the gloomy news about the company's right to operate the Cobre Panama mine being in peril. Meanwhile First Quantum said today that a ground fall at its Kansanshi operation in Zambia killed a contractor last Thursday. A day later, a second contractor was killed in a car accident at its Sentinel project in Zambia.
