New York spot gold added $26.70 to $2,040.30 on Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 10.66 points to 540.24 while the TSX gold index jumped 12.25 points to 290.61. Most Canadian gold miners had an up day, so long as they had no news. Newmont Corp. (NGT) jumped $3.24 to $55.20 on 830,000 shares, and Artemis Gold Inc. (ARTG) was more energetic, adding 51 cents to $6.50 on 1.12 million shares.
And then there was the miner with news. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM), its share price already more than halved over the past month because of worries that it may lose the right to operate its Cobre Panama mine, slid to an early morning low of $11.67 on word that the Supreme Court of Panama ruled the revised concession contract for the mine is unconstitutional.
That news came not from First Quantum, but from Franco-Nevada Corp. (FNV), which holds a royalty on the mine. Franco-Nevada dropped on the news but ended the day up $1.65 to $160.37 on 938,000 shares on word it "is in communication with" First Quantum and will provide further updates as they are available. First Quantum ended the day down 10 cents to $12.64 on 8.74 million shares.
