New York spot gold rose $13.10 to $2,049.10 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange added 12.23 points to 551.05 while the TSX gold index added 2.48 points to 288.07. Most Canadian-listed gold miners moved higher today. West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG), the latest in a long line of companies looking to run the old Madsen mine near Red Lake in Northwestern Ontario, had a good day, adding 10 cents to 78 cents on 783,000 shares.
And then there was Matt Badylak's Galiano Gold Inc. (GAU), which jumped to an intraday high of $1.14 on word it is acquiring a 45-per-cent interest in the Asanko gold mine in Ghana held by Gold Fields Ltd. The purchase, which will cost Galiano $20-million (U.S.) in stock now and future cash payments of up to $85-million (U.S.), along with a 1-per-cent royalty on 447,000 ounces of production, will give Galiano a 90-per-cent interest in the mine. (Ghana's government will own the rest.)
